The aim of any agricultural seedling nursery is to provide quality seedlings at wholesale prices. Secondly and more importantly is to keep up to date and keep improving.

Seed is constantly being improved. Worldwide massive research is done annually to improve plant vigour and disease resistance. This is done by species hybridization and corrective breeding with open pollinated varieties. The role of any nurseryman is to keep up to date with these changes therefore benefitting his cliental.

Foresters, farmers and gardeners alike need to plan months in advance. Seedling orders need to be planned with enough lead time to grow that specific crop. This not only improves the price of the seedlings but the quality as well.

Seedlings bought at the spur of the moment cost more and can often be passed their optimal transplant age. Zululand Nurseries has been a part of the Seedling Growers Association of South Africa since the beginning. The certification scheme that SGASA adopted has been used as a tool to constantly improve quality and reliability.
